When Escape Off Road Campers first started Four Wheel Driving the big question was
“Where shall we go?”
To help you plan a trip which will give a variety of scenery and camping spots (bush with no facilities or caravan parks) we have five very different trips starting from Adelaide.
The duration of each trip depends on the time you have available and if you get part way through a trip and run out of time you will generally only be one or two days drive from Adelaide.
When planning any trip check your maps and allow plenty of time to see the sights and have a couple of options for each nights camp location.
Site History:
Escape Offroad Camper Trailers was a small business located in Adelaide, South Australia which had available for hire two styles of camper trailers designed to be towed mostly by Four Wheel Drive vehicles to remote, out of the way places.
Here is the story of how they had become hooked on the camper trailer experience.
After years of camping in a dome tent and all of their gear stowed under a tarp on the back of a 4WD Rodeo Diesel tray top ute they upgraded to a Jackaroo and Spirit camper trailer in early 2001.
What a difference!!! No more sleeping on the ground, hoping air beds didn’t fail and having an area to sit at a table undercover in poor weather.
The greater storage facilities and being able to set up an awning to give protection from the sun were huge benefits which made camper trailer holidays so much better than tent holidays.
And what sort of places had they visited in their camper trailer you ask?
They had long weekend trips to Roxby Downs/Andamooka, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia’s Riverland (Barmera – Renmark), Flinders Ranges & Arkaroola, Little Desert National Park(Western Victoria), Robe on the Limestone Coast, Goolwa (Horseshoe Bay) and The Grampians in Victoria.
Longer trips have included Central Australia (Ayers Rock, Alice Springs & Chambers Pillar), Eyre Peninsula & Nullabor Plain for Whale watching, Sydney & the New South Wales South coast, The Victorian High country and The Murray River in Victoria from Yarrawonga to Mildura.
Their set up gave them all the comforts of home:-
Carrying a porta potti and a 12volt shower, which gave hot showers in the privacy of a change tent when camping with others.
In mid 2003 they started to think about upgrading camper trailers and after much investigation decided on the Tvan available from Track Trailers in Melbourne.
Once this decision was made they thought they would hire one for a long weekend to check it out however the closest hire Tvan was in Melbourne with a 2 week minimum hire. They proceeded with their purchase without hiring.
However they realised that in Adelaide there was a need for a quality unit such as the Tvan to be available for hire for periods of less than 2 weeks.
They had for HIRE – the new Tvan, Spirit camper trailer and 4WD accessories such as GPS, recovery gear, engel fridge, change tent & 12v shower, and a winter campfire kit which included an open fire hotplate/grill BBQ, camp oven, billy & jaffle iron.
